FILM REVIEW: SHUTTER ISLAND

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Not too many would argue that Martin Scorsese is one of the best American film directors we have. Even if we forgot about every other movie he has made, I think Goodfellas alone proves that he is an amazing director. His latest film, Shutter Island, is a bit different than where he’s gone in the past and that’s a good thing. It’s a tad on the wack side when artists always stick with the “safe” thing and never explore other subjects and ideas.

I really enjoyed Shutter Island and, for a movie that’s over 2 hours long, I never found myself bored or waiting for the credits to roll. Leonardo DiCaprio plays a pretty complex role here. As the film goes on there’s some pretty deeply emotional stuff that happens to his character. The film itself looks great, there’s some pretty interesting visuals going on in the film. I noticed a few times in the film certain quick things that if you blinked you would have never seen.

Some people are saying that this movie is lame because they didn’t dig the twist at the end. I’m saying, yea, it wasn’t that great of a twist but thats ok, the movie still entertained me. I’m also saying, its pretty lame when I review a movie that I just like and don’t either LOVE or HATE! That’s it, I gotta watch a shitty movie, I’ll be back.

DON’T FORGET YOUR ROOTS.

There’s so many things I admire about the punk/hardcore scene. I think the d.i.y nature of it all really inspires me, it’s definitely what inspired me to start Only Ones. This past Saturday, while watching H2O play their 15th anniversary show, I couldn’t help but think about that d.i.y. way of doing things. H2O isn’t a band thats played on the radio and their faces can’t be found on the sides of buses but they still tour the globe and sell out shows. How can a band do this with little to no mainstream media attention?

It all boils down to a bunch of guys getting together and writing some really fucking catchy songs. It’s about having fun on stage and maintaining a relationship with the fans that got them there. It’s about doing it yourself and making the art you are proud of.

I’m not surprised that H2O can still be alive and kicking after 15 years. This band has more energy and stage presence than bands half their age. Their catalog of great songs really doesn’t hurt either, you cannot help but sing along. I think even if you barely knew an H2O song, halfway through it you’d find yourself singing along.

I took some cool shots of H2O playing this past Saturday at Gramercy Theater. You can check out the whole set on our Flickr page. Adam came up to our merch table and really liked Sully, so he decided to put a sticker on his bass. Pretty damn awesome. It’s just another instance of this brand coming full circle.
