Tomcats Barbershop

Speaking of slicking back that hair…

I occasionally get the question, “what kind of hair style is that?” and I respond, “a pompadour” It was very popular in the 50′s and pretty much anyone, who was anyone had a pompadour. Of course there are a ton of varieties but you’ll know one when you see it. Elvis, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, James Dean, Conan O’Brien, and many more rocked the pomp to great effect.

So now I’m sure you’re clamoring, “Where can I get my hair cut like that?” Well kids, it’s a little harder than you’d think but fortunately for you, I have a solution. Tomcat’s Barbershop located on 130 India St., Brooklyn NY is where I go to get my ears lowered. I found this place a few years ago after several hit and misses at various barbershops. It’s sad to say but most places don’t know what you want. Some only know short and shorter, and others only understand you if you say “blow out”. Not on my watch.

So If you’re looking to get a cool haircut in a really happening place, check it out. Not only is it the bee’s knees but they sell a good selection of different pomades, which is the key to my success (that’s another post for another time) Check out Tomcat’s site right here: http://tomcatsbarbershop.com/

Black Hearts Social Club

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Hey ladies and germs, I’d like to introduce myself, I’ll be writing under Black Hearts Social Club on Only Ones Need Apply. Rob, who I’m sure you’re all familiar with, asked me to share some of my thoughts on his blog after looking at my original site http://blackheartsclub.tumblr.com/ We have a lot of similar interests and always have a good time when we hang out. The difference about my contributions here as opposed to my original site is that my posts here are going to be all killer, no filler. My current site is really an amalgamation of whatever I feel like, whether it just be a full post, photo or quote. What I do here for OO will have more direction, hence the slight name change. I’ll be focusing more on specific things that invoke what I like to call, old school cool. Old school cool is some term I’d like to pretend I came up with to describe that unique vibe that anything over 30 years has, whether it be cars, style, art, lifestyle, etc. If you happen to see me lurking around on the street, you’ll think I resemble a reject extra from the movie The Outsiders. I have a love for all things retro, vintage, and old. I think rob sees me as a unique individual who does what I like and what I think is cool, regardless of current trends and public opinion. This, in my mind, is what Only Ones is about, being yourself in whatever form that is. My form just happens to be stuck in the 50′s. So to all the kings and queens out there, slide into your tight jeans, find your canvas shoes, throw on your favorite (cleanest) Only Ones shirt, slick back your hair and take the ride.

ZINE

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

You might be seeing some different people writing stuff on this blog really soon. I have a vision for this blog to be more than just me yapping my jaw. I really want it to be a “zine” of sorts. A place where, even if you are repulsed by our clothes, maybe there’s some interesting stuff going down on the blog.

So, don’t be scared when you see posts from different people other than me. It’s gonna be fun and if your scared I’m still gonna be here, holding that pathetic quivering wrist of yours.

LEATHERFACE

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Leatherface is probably the most underrated punk band I’ve ever heard. You’ve probably never heard of them, and I don’t say that with some cocky “I know about more great bands than you” attitude. I say that because you should check em out. I can’t fully explain why their songs are so good. Maybe it’s because of how raw and real they are. Maybe it’s the singers “Lemmy-esque” voice that helps give the whole thing power. I guess maybe you should just listen for yourself, and maybe we can start giving this band the credit and attention they’ve long been deserving of.

TIM BURTON X ALICE IN WONDERLAND

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Tim Burton is less of a director these days than he is a brand. I look at his new film, Alice In Wonderland as a horrible callabo gone wrong. It seems as though studios think that people want to see classic films redone in the “Tim Burton” brand fashion. So they remake the movie, with some weird zainy ass shit, and everybody moseys on down to the local theater to watch it. I don’t know why we want to see Tim Burton redo “Alice In Wonderland”, maybe we envision a dark, creepy, interesting alternative to the classic. Maybe we think that Tim Burton learned his lesson with Planet of the Apes and Willy Wonka. He can’t make another crappy remake can he? OH YES HE CAN AND HE DID. WATCHING THIS SHIT WAS A FUCKING TORTUROUS EXPERIENCE, AN EXERCISE IN WITHSTANDING BOREDOM UNABRIDGED!

I don’t know where to start with this movie. I think what bothers me the most is that I can’t say anything that happened in the movie that warrants its running time. A full length two hour movie that doesn’t really do anything but show off some visuals. I really feel like everything in the movie, almost every advancement in story and Alice’s journey served to only satiate some computer graphic artists at Disney. Well, I hope they got to let their jizz canons loose cause I know I didn’t get to blow any load whatsoever.

And damn, what a boring movie this must have been to make, think about acting in front of a fucking green screen for months. I guess they can’t complain when they’re getting paid more than I’ll probably make in my whole lifetime. After this movie I snuck into The Crazies, and I was relieved that there was actual scenery, not something made in a computer.

Alice goes here, then goes there, she gets tall and short, and then tall again. She gets stuck there and then gets out here, she does this and then does that. The whole film just feels like a serious of actions and scene changes that just don’t really have any feel behind them, it really just felt cold. As I said before, the story in this film is secondary. I’d rather not even call this a film, it really works better as a screensaver.
