YOU SHOULD BE WATCHING…

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

If you have a Netflix account I’m sure you are aware that they changed up their service plans and hiked up their charges. Total bummer, dude! But even with the higher prices, Netflix is still the best way to watch movies at home.  It’s also a great way to discover films that you otherwise might have never seen. With so many films at your disposal it seems almost pointless just to stick to the mainstream blockbusters.  Here’s some picks from yours truly that you can “Watch Instantly” on Netflix!

Harold and Maude

I’m not one for those “girly” romantic movies like Dear John and The Notebook but I really have a soft spot for romantic films that either have a super unique style or story.  Harold and Maude has both and a killer soundtrack by Cat Stevens to boot.  It’s about a young man that falls for a 79 year old woman, enough said.  It’s so fucking cute.  Watch it.  NOW!

Buffalo ’66

Remember what I just said about romantic movies?  Yea, here’s another example and one of my favorites.  Buffalo ’66 is super stylish, unique and filled with hilarious moments.  I think I’ve watched this movie three times in the past week.  Vincent Gallo writes, directs and stars in this film about a young man who kidnaps a woman and forces her to pretend to be his wife.  There’s so many great moments in this film, I promise you.  Grab some heart shaped cookies and watch this one with someone special.

Creepshow

Two of the biggest names in horror, Stephen King and George Romero, team up on this horror film that’s almost more like a comedy.  The film is a collection of short stories that are really clever and entertaining.  Creepshow is the perfect example of how being cheesy and “bad” can be really, really good.  Leslie Nielsen is in it too, so what the fuck you waiting for?!

Exit Through the Giftshop

I guess it’s no surprise that when Banksy directed his first film, Exit Through the Giftshop, it was just as thought provoking as the street art he’s famous for.   What at first seems like a documentary about graffiti artists slowly becomes a film that questions what art is in general.  The film asks why some artists are valid and highly regarded while others are seen as unworthy copy-cats.  The film features many innovative street artists including Shepard Fairey who has a lot of interesting things to say about the whole movement.

The Vice Guide to Travel

What other series of documentaries will take you through the radioactive fields of Chernobyl, the illegal weapons trade in Pakistan, the feces covered beaches of Liberia, the bizarre time warped land of North Korea and more?  The Vice Guide to Travel does all that.  I think it’d be difficult to even find another group of people that would willingly go to these places and put themselves into such situations.  I guess that’s what makes Vice so damn good!

And there you have it, hope you enjoy them!  Happy Netflixing!

GRIME TV 2

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

I’m consistently impressed with Mike Schmitt’s work on the Grime edits.  It’s always super stylish, original and filled with great tunes.  I don’t think there’s a new edit that comes out where I’m not trying to find out the names of the songs used.  This new piece premiered at the Bicycle Film Fest and I think it goes beyond your average fixed freestyle edit and can stand alone as just a bad-ass film in general.  Utilizing footage from their recent world tour, this is Grime TV 2.

HORRIBLE BOSSES

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

I think we can all relate to the premise of Horrible Bosses.  Three dudes are unhappy with their place of work because each of their fucking bosses are INSANE and MAD DOUCHY!  Sounds about right.  Although I’ve had the pleasure of working under some great people, I’ve also worked under some doucherific scum fucks.  But I mean, kill your boss?!  Seems a bit fucking harsh, no?  I guess that’s the beauty of comedy, you can even make senseless manslaughter/murder freaking HILARIOUS.

I expected this movie to suck 7 schlongs on a schlong sucking scale of 1 to 10…10 schlongs being the suckiest and 1 being a pretty awesome movie.  I was actually relatively entertained from start to finish, which was a pleasant surprise.  Everyone in the film was really great actually.  I particularly enjoyed Jennifer Aniston here, she seemed to have a lot of fun with her character and the same could be said for Colin Farrell’s role.  Although, I feel like we didn’t see too much of Farrell or at least not as much as I would have liked to since his character seemed to have a lot of  comedic potential.

The story is obviously over-the-top and fairly original.  I could be wrong but I don’t remember a recent comedy that was about three dudes trying to murder their bosses.  At least, I can’t think of one at the moment.  Ok, fine!  I’m sure there is some movie that’s pretty close to this but it’s not the same.  It’s refreshing these days to find any movie that is remotely original at all.  Heck, half the trailers I saw before Horrible Bosses were remakes.   That’s pretty fucking sad.

At the end of the day, Horrible Bosses cashes in on one common theme and that is our hatred for the higher up.   I think it was The Who that said “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.”  The idea of a boss, no matter who, is someone who controls you.   Horrible Bosses taps into a morbid fantasy of killing your boss and ultimately killing that control.  I suppose it’s this trap with which we are stuck that makes for perfect comedy due to its complete absurdity.   It’s absurd to be so trapped at a job that the only way out is by murdering your boss.  The irony is that the same people in the theater watching the film and laughing along with it will go to work the next day and feel trapped themselves.  I suppose the dollar is the most horrible boss there is, lots of people will forfeit happiness five days a week for it and that’s the funniest part of it all.

If you ever had a sick morbid fantasy about killing your boss or you just feel like seeing a comedy that doesn’t really even suck then look no further, Horrible Bosses is for you!
